Department of Telecommunication to announce the new schedule for 5G trials

Department of Telecommunication to announce the new schedule for 5G trials

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is all set to announce the new schedule for 5G trials. The Dot made this decision after being pulled by the parliamentary committee on lack of preparedness for 5G. The Ministry of Telecommunication held a meeting with telecom operators and equipment makers and have informed them regarding the 5G trials. The DoT has assured the telecom operators that it will soon announce the 5G trial schedule.

The government has asked the operators to submit applications for the trials. The approvals will be given only to the early applicants. The government has stated that it will allocate 3.5 Ghz spectrum for the trials to the operators. The mobile operators are very excited about the trials; equipment makers like Nokia and Ericsson too have showed interest in the 5G trials.

It is said that the trials will give an opportunity to companies like Reliance Jio to test its locally developed 5G spectrum solution. The company had earlier got an approval from the telecom ministry and DoT for lab testing its solution.  The current 5G trials will cover around seven percent of India’s population. Telecom secretary Anshu Prakash stated after the meeting with telecom operators in the Prime Minister’s Office.
