BSNL Tower Corporation (BTCL) to carry out non-telecom activities soon

The non-telecom matters and activities of the state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be undertaken by its subsidiary BSNL Tower Corporation (BTCL). The firm has already commenced a separate accounting process from 1st October. BTCL will also oversee the projects where the state-run telco is largely a facilitator. The officials have stated that this move is being seen as an attempt to reduce license fee liability on activities that do not require the use of telecom licenses.

Under the new arrangement, BTCL will now undertake smart city projects, enterprise business, for state governments, public sector banks, and autonomous bodies, among others, as per a letter by BSNL chairman and MD PK Purwar that the publication accessed. The circle general managers (CGMs) have been additionally given the task to identify the manpower in BSNL that can be migrated to BTCL.

BTCL will also be given loans or advances necessary to facilitate projects. The telecom activities can be billed to BTCL by BSNL at arm’s length principle in order to restrict the implication of license to telecom license activities only. With this move BSNL Tower will be taking over most of the rural development projects.
