Airtel Switches to Digital KYC for Verification, Replaces Aadhaar Verification

Bharati Airtel has made an announcement about the new verification process for its new users. The announcement was made public on Monday.

The new verification will be carried out through an alternate digital KYC process. With this, Aadhaar-based electronic verification will be discontinued.

New Delhi and few parts of Uttar Pradesh are the first to start with the new alternate digital KYC process. In a few days, the telecom operator will expand it to other parts of the country as well.

Since the entire verification would be digital, users will have to scan their address and identity proof along with uploading a photo and filling an online customer acquisition form.

According to an Airtel official, the company will be starting out the eKYC processonce the digital KYC system is introduced to new cities and towns.

The Department of Telecommunications had made an announcement on October 26th, highlighting acourt order which prohibitstelecom operatorsfrom usingAadhaarcard for electronic verification of current as well as new connections.

The department of telecom instructed the guidelines to all telecom operators in the countryto ensure the readiness of their systems andissue the proof of concept of the proposed digital process for approval and to discontinue the use of Aadhaar-based e-KYC and report compliance. All the guidelines must be completed by November 5.
