TikTok said that staff in China can access user data in UK and EU

TikTok, the Chinese video-sharing platform has told users that some of its employees in China have access to the data of accounts in the European Union and the UK.

The popular video-sharing platform said the privacy policy of the app was based on a demonstrated need to do their job. Over concerns that data could be passed to the Chinese government, the report has come under scrutiny from authorities around the world including the US and UK. A US official called for the app to be banned in America, earlier this week.

According to TikTok, the policy applies to Switzerland, the European Economic Area, and the United Kingdom. TikTok’s head of privacy for Europe, Elaine Fox said that the European user data is currently stored in the US and Singapore by TikTok. ByteDance, TikTok’s owner has repeatedly denied that it is controlled by the Chinese government.

TikTok has come under intense scrutiny by authorities in the US, UK, and EU. In August the UK Parliament shut down its TikTok account after MPs raised concerns about the risk of data being passed to the Chinese government. Until TikTok provided "credible assurances" that no data could be passed to Beijing, senior peers and MPs called for the account to be removed.
