Instagram plans on increasing the video time limit from one minute to 10 minutes. It seeks to lure young users away from various other online video streamers like YouTube. Also, Instagram accounts that have a very large audience base will be able to stream videos for an hour. This new feature will either be implemented in Instagram or in a new app called IGTV. Facebook’s plan is to have more opportunity to sell advertisement because of its recent scandals.
Keep in mind that Facebook is implementing this idea because it is the parent company of Instagram. Hence, this gives Instagram an even wider audience count. Facebook has obviously mimicked YouTube and this is not the first time. It has also used ideas form Snapchat as well. This is also in the case of another app called WhatsApp.
In the past, Facebook struggled in attracting teens. So, for now, the plan is to grab teens’ attention through the youth-trend Instagram. Around 72% of kids from the US who are of the age group 13-17 use Instagram but 85% use YouTube. Facebook is gradually losing its audience and now stands at 51%.
The new innovation has already been implemented by others like YouTube but this is where entrepreneurship comes in to play and maybe it may succeed or it may not. Beating a user base of 1.8 billion is not an easy task, let us see if Instagram can manage it.
