The New Catalyst Which Coverts Biomass into Biofuel Efficiently

Using renewable sources of energy have become very important to cut down pollution. To make the environment more pollution free, a team of researchers from Pune have found a new way to convert biomass into biofuel in an efficient manner.

The scientists at National Chemical Laboratory, Pune have created a catalyst which can convert industrial biomass into biodiesel without polluting the environment.

The scientists developed the catalyst from an organic compound known as furfural. The organic compound can be extracted from various agricultural waste biomasses such as bran, bagasse, sawdust, cottonseed hulls, rice hulls,and others.

Firstly, the compound is changed into alcohol through a chemical process. After that, the compound is processed to create alkyl levulinates, i.e. ethyl levulinate. During the whole process, there are various steps and relatively takes a longer time to complete. Once the required steps were completed, the scientists finally created a new version of catalyst- zeolite catalyst (HPW/Meso-HZ-5 - ).

It was found that the new creation was very effective in speeding up the conversion process. The new catalyst showcased a greater activity in comparison to H-ZSM-5 (parent) and Meso-HZ-5 when used separately.

The catalyst’s performance was superior as it could convert cent% furfural alcohol conversion along with 97% ethyl levulinate biodiesel yield and 3% ethoxy methyl furan yield.

The complete results of the new development were published in journal Environmental Progress & Sustainable Energy.
