A subsidiary of Tata Group called the Tata Chemicals Limited (TCL) has now signed a new memorandum of understanding with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). According to the MoU (memorandum of understanding), Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre’s lithium-ion cell technology’s transfer will be taken care of by Tata Chemicals Limited. It will be optimized to produce space-grade lithium-ion cells. The main intention is to power rockets and satellites. That is why the technology is said to be transferred to Tata Chemicals so that it can get more viability for manufacturing lithium-ion cells in the country.
Tata Chemicals Limited will be provided with a non-exclusive basis. It is said that ISRO might be forwarding tech to various other firms. But for now Tata Chemicals Limited will be using the tech to manufacture lithium-ion cells of varying size, energy, capacity and power density. Majorly to carter the power storage requirements in the current market and further improve the market. Thus, making this a more commercially available tech. The Lithium-ion batteries have found even more widespread use on a global level with advent electric vehicles. That is why Tata Chemicals Limited decided to announce its plan on investing a homegrown production of lithium-ion batteries. The location of operations will be in Gujarat along with other players.
