Singapore turns to robots for cleanliness as workers flee to their home countries

More and more robots are now being deployed in Singapore to maintain hygiene amid the fear of the spread of the coronavirus. Usually, these hygienic services to maintain public facilities spotlessly are done by the foreign workers who had left for their home countries amid the outbreak.

Singapore, also dubbed as “Fine City” is known for its impeccable cleanliness of public places by imposing fines on offenses such as spitting and littering in public. Cleaning companies are now forced to seek robotic help as countries have shut borders, making labor acquisition a huge challenge. A sleek robot named “Ella” is already scrubbing the floors of the Alexandra Hospital. The robot stops on seeing a person approaching in the opposite direction and also says “excuse me” to navigate around hallways. A  Startup named LionsBot International had developed Ella and has deployed 40 members in other locations such as supermarkets and shopping malls.

With the government seeking to amend its laws soon to tighten their sanitation standards, more businesses start considering the use of robots. Cleaning robots may continue to be seen everywhere in the city even after the virus outbreak subsides. The country looks forward to upgrading its sanitation standards to keep it shiny and new.
