The brick and mortar culture for liquor retail is shrinking a lot in India, but on the flip side, it is getting a premium upgrade by converting itself into larger-format stores covering each and every part of the country. There are several large retail setups in India like Tonique in Hyderabad with 15,000 sqft, Madhuloka in Bangalore has 5000 sqft boutique, and Gurugram has the Liquor Warehouse. The retail outlets for liquor in India have come a long way from their dingy desi counterparts of olden times. The owner of Tonique, Anith Reddy, has stated that their luxury showroom is one of the best and gives any store a run for its money.
Tonique’s stores have sommeliers, in-house connoisseurs, and also female bouncers due to the fact that 30 percent of their customers are women. With a 25,000 sqft of retail outlet in India, Tonique makes almost 100 Crore sales from each store every year. The company is expected to build a 40,000 sqft store in Delhi, and it is now closely watching the state's excise conditions. Madhuloka, one of the largest liquor retailers in Bangalore, has stated that the company has witnessed a boom in the last couple of years, and they have more than 450 stores in Bangalore.
