Expansion plans are back on track for retailers in India

Expansion plans are back on track for retailers in India

The ongoing Covid pandemic had put expansion plans on hold for a large retail organization. Since the situation is now much better, the retailers are bringing their plans back on track. Experts are speculating that popular electronics, fast-food, and fashion retailers are all set to open new stores in the coming months. MD of JLL India, Shubhranshu Pani, has stated that the expansion plans have picked up the pace for hypermarkets, beauty formats, electronic chains, and value retailers. The formal category was one of the biggest segments to get hit by the pandemic, whereas the athleisure and casual segment continued to do well.

Tier two and three markets have performed very well under pressure and have recovered substantially, whereas tier one is still recovering. Some of the biggest retailers to make progress in their store opening plans are Levi’s, Benetton, Aditya Birla with its brands like Peter England, Louis Phillipe, Allen Solly; and fast food brands like McDonald’s and Domino’s. Sundeep Chugh, MD of Benetton India has stated that the company is looking forward to opening more than 30 stores in various parts of the country. Benetton had also put its expansion plans on hold following the Covid pandemic, and the focus was previously on increasing the profitability of the existing stores.
