Storage and distribution terminal in Telangana gets a “green signal”

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd gets a “green signal” from the Expert Appraisal Committee under the Environment Ministry for setting up grass root petroleum storage and distribution terminalat Malkapur village, Yadadridistrict in Telangana. The upcoming storage and distribution terminal proposed by IOC consists of 28 oil tanks with a total capacity of 165 million liters. The investment in the project is estimated to be Rs. 570 crore.

"At least 2 percent of the total project cost shall be allocated for Corporate Environment Responsibility (CER) and item-wise details along with time-bound action plan shall be prepared and submitted to the Ministry’s Regional Office,"stated EAC. The total area allocated for the project is more than 3 lakh square meters. The greenbelt will be built in an area of over 1 lakh square meterswhich is estimated to cover around 33% of the total area available for the project.

State Pollution Control Board conducted a public hearing for the project on September 26th, 2018. The concerns expressed during the public hearing were mainly related to health andemployment facilities.

There aren’t any national parks, wildlife sanctuaries,tiger/elephant reserves, biosphere reservesetc. within 10 km of the project area.

However, IOC requires prior approval from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) for the project. In case of any amendments, the proposal must seek a fresh appraisal from the sectoral EAC.
