The Measles outbreak in Mumbai, India claims 12 children

Authorities said that Measles has killed 12 children in the western Indian city of Mumbai and surrounding areas.

The first death due to measles was reported around 26 and 27 October when three children died within 48 hours. This year, Mumbai had 233 confirmed cases of measles until Wednesday, which is a three-fold jump from last year’s 92 cases and two deaths. According to authorities a vaccination drive amid the Covid pandemic has contributed to the spike in measles infection.

Measles is more contagious than Covid and it can cause serious complications, especially in children below five years. It causes rashes, fever, and coughing and can be prevented by two doses of the mumps, measles, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The latest reported death, On Tuesday, an eight-month-old baby is the latest reported death. The baby was who was partially immunized, said the local municipal body in a press note.

There have been several large measles outbreaks in countries across Europe because here MMR vaccine uptake has been relatively low. The infection is so contagious that nine in every ten people can catch it if they are exposed and unvaccinated.
