30 July, 2019
Google’s Doodle has always shown us some amazing stories. Now, it has moved its attention towards Dr. Muthulakshmi, who was the first woman legislator in India. Also, she was the first-ever female student to get admitted to Maharaja College and Madras Medical College. The list doesn’t stop here; she has also worked as a surgeon in a government hospital.
This made the Tamil Nadu government announce 30th July as ‘Hospital Day’. She was born on 30 July 1883 in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. She completely focused her life on gender inequality, public health and the transformation of the lives of many people. Back in those days, girls at a very young age were forced to get married and Muthulakshmi also had to face the same fate. But she refused and convinced her parents to for further studies. She later graduated with honors, but as time went on she lost her sister to cancer and that is what triggered her to open a cancer institute called Adayar Cancer Institute in 1954.
She has aided many in her time and her legacy continues. This is why Google wishes to tell her story to everyone.
