Taiwan’s The Misanthrope Society is the first bar meant for those with a dark sense of humor

Taiwan’s The Misanthrope Society is the first bar meant for those with a dark sense of humor

Taiwan has established a special bar meant for those who are depressed and have an esoteric sense of humor and lifestyle in the downtown area of Taipei. The bar called The Misanthrope Society offers a different take on food and alcohol as well as the ambience. The restaurant offers a deathly take on its fare whilst offering cocktails with quirky names and fried chicken that looks like charred remains. The bar/restaurant was set up by an innovative owner who suffered massive depression and wanted to open a place offering solace to fellow sufferers.

We call it 'The Misanthrope Society,' which literally means you can hate this world as much as you want here," says Chen Xiaoguai, the owner of the Misanthrope Society,”I want to attract people with the dark side," so they can then help each other and experience "the warmth from different people. I think the most important thing in my case in stepping out from the dark side is the help from people, the friends I met in hospital. I want to replicate this peer support group."

Considering that people with mental illnesses choose to abstain owing to their medication and general mental health, Chen has also offered a coffeehouse/Book house setup where people can have a conversation over a good ol’ cuppa.
