French fine-dine Odette bags No.1 position under Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants title

Odette, one of the most famous French cuisine restaurants at the National Gallery, Singapore grabs No. 1 position on this year's Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list for the second year in a row.

The annual list was live streamed online. The on-site event which was meant to be held in Japan's Saga prefecture was cancelled last month as a result coronavirus outbreak.

Odette's chef and owner Julien Royer and his team watched the ceremony together at the restaurant, he told The Straits Times. He said it helped them to temporarily forget their worries of the past few weeks.

"It's a challenging time for us all in the food and beverage industry. It's difficult to celebrate at the moment, but we take this as a sign of positivity and optimism for us. We have to find solutions and hope for a better future," Julien said.

Due to the heated virus outbreak, the restaurant has been hit by many numbers of cancellations in the last few days, said chef Royer, as about 30 per cent of its diners are tourists who have cancelled their trips to Singapore. He also expressed his deep concern over the supply of ingredients as it relies heavily on imported produce.
