While everything appeared to have gone without a speck of problem in the opening ceremony of Winter Olympics at PyeongChang, this was far from the truth.
Organisers of the PyeongChang games admitted today its servers were attacked during the spellbinding event on Feb. 9th
South Korean news agency Yonhap News reported that CYBER attackers, allegedly from Russia Hacked the opening ceremony.
A series of servers went down during the festivities and took the PyeongChang 2018 website and some Internet-connected TVs at the press center with them. The website shutdown temporarily prevented spectators from printing their tickets to Olympic events.
In response to the attack, organizers briefly shut down their own servers — temporarily knocking the Pyeongchang 2018 website. The problem also caused failed drone deployments during the ceremony, forcing broadcasters to splice in pre-recorded footage of the high-tech theatrics.
Currently, nothing is known at present, about the attack or the people behind it.
An Olympics spokesman confirmed “There were some issues that impacted some of our non-critical systems last night for a few hours. “We apologize for the inconvenience caused to all those affected.
“These have not disrupted any events or had any effect on the safety and security of any athletes or spectators.” He added
But, the hacking of the Olympics and related organizations is nothing new. In 2016, the World Anti-Doping Agency admitted to being the victim of a hack, saying that Russian hackers had stolen confidential medical data pertaining to athletes.
