Data analytics and AI will be leveraged to improve compliance in India

Data analytics and AI will be leveraged to improve compliance in India

The Government of India is planning to increase the use of data analytics and artificial intelligence to trace tax evaders. This move will drastically improvise the compliance with the Goods and Service Tax (GST) and furthermore, augment the revenue. Prominent tax officials are expected to attend the brainstorming session which will be chaired by Ajay Bhushan Pandey, a revenue secretary to add more firmness to this plan. A day-long meeting will be held by the revenue secretary along with commissioners on January 7 to discuss the methods of streamlining the GST system. The discussion is expected to include an assessment of AI and data analytics to enforce and red-flag tax evaders. The meeting is taking place just in time when the government is notifying the changes made to the GST rules. The new changes will prevent fake invoicing and frauds, besides that, a grievance cell will be set up to make sure that the genuine taxpayers are free from harassment and increase the tax base.

Last week the government reduced input tax credit by 10 percent. Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs had made it clear to field officials that a GST grievance redressal committee must be set up at state and zonal levels.
