Amazon is in fact a synonym for the cloud solutions. The Amazon Web Services (AWS) pioneered the cloud computing business in 2006 with a service touted as a quick and easy way for smaller business to get affordable, high-powered computing services. Amazon was initially not open to the idea of Kubernetes, the open cloud technology. But as the competition in the cloud technologies has increased, the company has recently announced the adoption of Kubernetes. AWS Chief Executive Andy Jassy made the Kubernetes announcement at Re: Invent, AWS’s annual conference in Las Vegas which this year attracted more than 40,000 attendees.
The application container technology provided by Docker promises to change the way that IT operations are carried out just as virtualization technology did a few years previously. The advantage with Kubernetes is that is its ability to run an application on any public cloud, including Microsoft’s Azure and Alphabet Inc’s Google Cloud Platform, making it easier to migrate from one cloud vendor to another. Although the company has long back tried to get hold of this with a similar technology, Google made a clean sweep by introducing the container technology and AWS had little choice but to support it. Kubernetes has emerged as a standard among companies as they build more applications on public clouds, the big computer data centers that are displacing traditional customer-owned computer systems. This might be the central factor that has changed the policies of the company. Kubernetes provide a platform for automating deployment, scaling, and operations of application containers across clusters of hosts.
