Southeast Asian countries are still closed for international travelers due to the surge in new cases

Southeast Asian countries are still closed for international travelers due to the surge in new cases

In the Southeast Asia region, there are various countries that are dependent on tourism. Now due to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns, most of the travel industries in this region are struggling to survive. Even though several countries are now open to traveling, most Southeast Asia regions are remaining closed. According to the prediction from the World Tourism Organization, the majority of 2020 will witness almost 80 percent less international tourist numbers. Furthermore, reports suggest that a high impact was felt in the Asia and Pacific region due to the pandemic.  Up to some extent, the pandemic has been contained in Asia, but authorities are still unsure about the reopening of borders due to the virus's unpredictable nature. The Thailand government presented new schemes for long-stay travelers, but even those plans were soon scarped after a surge in new cases.

Deputy Governor for marketing at the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Tanes Petsuwan, stated that travelers visiting Thailand could get quarantined for 14 days in either Phuket or Bangkok. Some international flights were resumed in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Brunei. Countries like Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Laos are still closed for foreigners, while only essential traveling is allowed in the Philippines.
