India to have its first Night Sky Sanctuary in Ladakh to boost Astro tourism

The sanctuary is located in Hanle as it is the most suitable area as it is a cold desert region

India to get its first Night Sky Sanctuary at Ladakh. The sanctuary will be set up in the famous historic Hanle village as part of the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary. It will be the world's highest-located site. The government is hoping the new sanctuary to boost Astro Tourism. All the stakeholders would jointly work toward preserving the night sky from unwanted light pollution and illumination, which seriously threatens scientific observations and natural sky conditions, said Dr. Jitendra Singh. The sanctuary is located in Hanle as it is the most suitable area as it is a cold desert region. Since it is the highest-located site, Hanle is far away from populated areas, human disturbance, or pollution.

The region is best suited due to dry weather conditions and clear skies. It is also a hub spot for telescopes like the GROWTH-India telescopes, the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment Telescope (MACE), High Energy Gamma Ray telescope (HAGAR), and the Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT).Dr. Annapurni Subramaniam, Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, told The Hindu, "There would be some restrictions during the evening and night to vehicles and headlights. There will be delineators on roads like you do outside observatories. People can come, observe the sky, park and stay in homestays".
