Singapore to launch first-ever palatable and nutritious insect-based pet food

Singapore is all set to launch the first-ever insect-based pet food. Pet Chow companies specialized in making dog and cat food from insects like black soldier fly larvae are now looking to gain a foothold in Asia. It is stated that two European start-ups are venturing into the Asian pet food market. It is opening its head office in Singapore; the operations will be held from Malaysia.

The insect protein incurs a low carbon footprint than other food products such as beef, chicken, or Salmon as they feed on low-grade food waste. It is also easy to grow them quickly, and they do not need a larger space to farm. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for meat has gradually decreased due to supply chain disruptions; thereby, the need for this insect-based food has gained popularity.

Insects are rich sources of proteins and have a lot of amino acid residues stored within them and ten times less food and 15 times less water farm one kilogram of insects than other regular pet foods. Europe based pet food companies like Entoma Petfood, Yora, are planning to launch their new outlets in Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia by the end of this year.
