World’s largest shipping company is rerouting to help protect blue whales

Blue whales can be found around the year in the southern tip of Sri Lanka

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, the world's largest container line in the world has rerouted its ships near the coast of Sri Lanka in order to avoid collisions with the endangered blue whales that frequent the same routes. The company in a statement said "MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has taken this major step to protect blue whales and other cetaceans living and feeding in the waters off the coast of Sri Lanka”

The decision was taken in line with research conducted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) along with other universities and groups. The ships passing through the coastal waters of Sri Lanka will now travel about 15 nautical miles to the south from the earlier route .IFAW in a statement praised MSC's rerouting and said that Blue whales can be found around the year in the southern tip of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, resulting in collisions as common international shipping lanes pass through the sea where most of the whales congregate.
