Warning of mudslides and flooding as typhoon Nanmadol battered Japan

Rescue workers in Japan have warned of flooding and mudslides as one of the biggest storms in recent decades named Nanmadol, battered the country.

Typhoon Nanmadol has injured 90 people and killed at least two since it made landfall on the southern island of Kyushu. More than 350,000 houses are without power and nine million people have been told to evacuate. Forecasts predicted that over the next 24 hours there could be 400mm of rain.

NHK, a state broadcaster said one man died after being buried in a landslide and another died after his car was submerged in the flood. The broadcast also said that there is still a person missing. The super typhoon, Nanmadol, brought gusts of up to 234km/h, destroyed homes, and disrupted business and transport. Nanmadol was equivalent to category four or five hurricanes.

Tokyo, the capital city, also experienced heavy rainfall, and the Tozai underground line was suspended because of flooding. Ferries, bullet train services, and hundreds of flights have been canceled; businesses and shops have shut. Local video footage showed billboards toppled over the ripped-off roofs of buildings due to the rain. Fumio Kishida, the Prime Minister of Japan delayed his visit to New York to monitor the impact of the storm. His visit to NY was to give a speech at the UN General Assembly.
